It’s been a year since Governor Tom Wolf directed Pennsylvania to cut carbon pollution from power plants and join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative — a regional project to fight the climate crisis.

And now the rubber is meeting the road: Next week the Environmental Quality Board will vote on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. A yes vote will move this critical project forward; a no vote could kill it.

Dear Environmental Quality Board Members,

I'm writing as a Pennsylvanian to call on you to take real action on the climate crisis by voting for our participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). As the third largest polluting state in the country, it's time for Pennsylvania to step up and take real action to cut the carbon pollution produced by its power plants.

Since the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative was launched more than a decade ago, it has saved consumers hundreds of millions of dollars on energy, with billions more in savings to come. It has created thousands of new jobs in the booming clean energy sector and improved public health as carbon and other harmful air pollutants from the region's power plants have been cut in half.

And cutting air pollution is particularly important in light of the COVID-19 pandemic: the coronavirus is demonstrating the catastrophic public health impacts of air pollution, which aggravates problems like lung and heart disease and may weaken a person's ability to survive COVID-19.

Now is the time for policymakers like you to take action on air pollution, the climate crisis, and public health. Please vote YES to ensure Pennsylvania joins RGGI.
