Help get rid of lead in Illinois’ drinking water

Illinois has more lead service lines than any other state, putting millions of people at risk of exposure to toxic, lead-contaminated drinking water. And Black and Latinx Illinoisans are twice as likely to live in communities with lead service lines than white residents are.

Fortunately, the Illinois General Assembly is considering a bill RIGHT NOW that would mandate that water utilities begin the process of replacing all the lead service lines within the state.

Dear Illinois State Senator:
 
As your constituent, I strongly urge you to pass House Bill 3739, the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act.

Illinois has the most lead service lines in the entire country, putting Illinoisans across the state at risk of exposure to toxic, lead-contaminated drinking water.

And Black and Latinx Illinoisans are twice as likely to live in communities with lead service lines than white residents are.

But this new bill will help protect communities in a BIG way. It would mandate that all water utilities begin the process of replacing all of the lead service lines within the state.

Lead in drinking water is one of the biggest threats to human health in the United States. It can cause serious, irreversible damage to children and developing fetuses, and is linked to fertility issues, cardiovascular disease, and kidney problems in otherwise healthy adults.

Illinois must mandate full lead service replacement, ban the dangerous practice of partial replacement, and establish an equitable revenue source which ensures that individual homeowners and ratepayers won't have to shoulder the burden of paying to replace these lead pipes.
