Toxic Pesticides Are Threatening CA Communities and Farmworkers

California state lawmakers will soon vote on a budget proposal that could help protect communities from toxic pesticides and make our food and agricultural systems healthier for future generations — and they need to hear from thousands of supporters like you IMMEDIATELY.

The overuse of toxic pesticides across the state threatens the health of communities and wreaks havoc on our environment, wildlife, and food supply. And exposure to dangerous pesticides has even been linked to increased vulnerability to COVID-19.

This proposal would modernize the fees imposed on pesticide sales, which haven't been updated in nearly two decades, to better reflect the risks and burdens posed by the most dangerous pesticides. It would also invest in critical new health and safety programs.

We must ensure that the state uses these new funds for programs that help safeguard farmworkers, agricultural communities, and ecosystems from toxic chemicals, while helping farmers transition to more sustainable practices.

Dear California State Legislators:

As your constituent, I'm asking you to support California's transition to sustainable agriculture, and away from toxic pesticides that are harming California communities, farmworkers, waterways, and wildlife.

I support Governor Newsom's budget proposal that would modernize the fees imposed on pesticide sales, which haven't been updated in nearly two decades, to better reflect the risks and burdens posed by the most dangerous pesticides.

I ask that you please ensure that the state uses these new funds for programs that help protect farmworkers, agricultural communities, and ecosystems from toxic chemicals, while helping farmers transition to more sustainable practices.

The impacts of our overreliance on toxic pesticides are devastating. Scientists have found that commonly used pesticide products can cause long-term health impacts such as cancer, neurological problems, and learning disabilities.

Children are especially vulnerable to pesticides because their bodies are still developing. Farmworkers and their families and communities — who are disproportionately Latino and low-income — bear the brunt of harm from toxic pesticide use in agriculture.

These pesticides also threaten the survival of bees and other pollinators that we rely on to grow a wide range of crops and maintain our food supply.

For all these reasons, we need to update the fees charged for pesticide sales to better reflect risks, invest in sustainable agriculture and protect the people and ecosystems impacted by dangerous chemicals.
