As we feared, President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement — and his top legislative priority right now is to get Congress to approve his proposal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
That new trade plan — called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) — doesn’t meet the most basic environmental standards for modern trade agreements. It fails to even mention climate change, much less address it.
But Trump needs Congress to pass the new trade agreement before it can go into effect. That means Congress has a golden opportunity to help the U.S. meet its Paris emissions reduction commitments — by including those goals as part of the USMCA.
Tell Congress to include the Paris climate agreement in Trump’s new trade plan.
