Climate change means we can expect more extreme weather. As Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate demonstrate, we can’t wait for the next storm before we take strong action to prepare for future natural disasters. To better protect Americans from storms and sea level rise, Congress is considering critical reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program and reinstating the federal flood protection standards that President Trump rescinded just days before Harvey made landfall.
But opposition by President Trump and powerful developers who stand to profit from increasingly vulnerable coastal areas could stand in the way.
