Communities throughout the Midwest and the Lower Mississippi River Basin have been living through one of the longest periods of flooding ever recorded in the United States. Yet right now, Illinois’ Department of Natural Resources is considering weakening Illinois’ protections against flooding.
This epic climate change-fueled flooding has uprooted the lives of many and washed away more than $12 billion worth of crops, livestock, and property across the region.
Illinois hasn’t suffered as much damage as nearby states like Missouri and Iowa have because the Prairie State currently has some of the strongest floodplain management regulations in the Midwest. As extreme flooding events become more frequent and grow in magnitude, we cannot let the state roll back these vital safeguards.
Tell Governor Pritzker that you’re counting on him to strengthen — not weaken — critical protections against flooding in Illinois.
