The Migratory Bird Treaty Act helps protect over 1,000 species of birds—including cardinals, bald eagles, prairie falcons, and ducks—from unauthorized hunting, toxic waste, wind turbines, oil spills, and other industrial threats.
This conservation law has been instrumental in recovering iconic species from the brink since its inception 100 years ago. And it helped hold BP accountable for the deaths of over a million birds caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
But right now, President Trump’s Interior Department is attempting to gut this landmark legislation so that corporations and industries that kill birds are no longer held accountable for their actions.
